My Trip to Nigeria
My name is Elizabeth McKee. I just finished an observation trip to Nigeria where our first 120,000 bed nets were distributed, purchased from the money already raised this year by Nothing But Nets. These bed nets prevent malaria, one of the largest killers among children in Africa.Over a million people each year die of malaria, 75% of whom are children. The UN Foundation is committed to decreasing the mortality rate of this killer through a new campaign called Nothing But Nets. There is a simple solution to dramatically reducing these numbers: bed nets.
It only costs $10 to buy and distribute a bed net and to educate a family on its use. I learned from our WHO colleagues in Africa that the last $3 for education and distribution are as important as the net itself.
In the state of Lagos, I met Noimot Bakare, a mother who has already lost one son to malaria. Muji, her three-year-old son received one of the nets at his school in Apapa. Noimot told me how great the need is in her country, not only for bed nets but also for education regarding malaria prevention.
You too can help families like Bakare’s for as little as $10.
